World Wide Web

Terms from Artificial Intelligence: humans at the heart of algorithms

Although we mostly think of the web in terms of human readable web pages, the invention of the World Wide Web by Berners-Lee, Tim was originally focused on helping physicists at CERN to share data. This vision is expressed in the semantic web a number of technologies aimed at making the knowledge on the web also understandable by machines. In addition, AI is being used extensively, for example in recommender systems that suggest items for you in media and shopping web sites, and to celect items for feeds in social media applications. Furthermore, even human readable pages are being used as data for machine learning notably large language models. Indeed, it is this huge volume of big data available on the web which has been one of the main drivers for the latest wave of AI success.
